Director of Data & Insights
Puck is seeking a Director of Data & Insights to lead our data function and bring clarity, efficiency, and intelligence to everything Puck does as a digital publisher. This role is ideal for someone who can design and manage a modern data stack, develop meaningful insights, and deliver concise, actionable storytelling for growth.
You’ll be responsible for building robust data systems and tools that support decision-making across editorial, subscription growth, and commercial revenue. This is a technical leadership role with high visibility—and a direct impact on the future of Puck.
This role is a hybrid role located in our downtown Manhattan headquarters, with the expectation that the incumbent is onsite a minimum of 3 days per week. Remote candidates will not be considered.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Design and manage Puck’s data architecture, including ETL/ELT pipelines, data warehouse, and reporting layers.
- Consolidate and normalize data from platforms like Stripe, Customer I/O, Google Analytics, and WordPress.
- Manage scalable infrastructure to support audience analytics, subscription funnel analysis, and lifecycle tracking.
- Maintain high data quality, governance, and documentation standards.
- Partner closely with stakeholders across marketing, editorial, business operations, product & engineer, and commercial to define data needs and deliver actionable dashboards and reports
- Lead technical and reporting support for experimentation efforts, including A/B testing infrastructure.
- Serve as a thought partner to senior leadership by providing regular non-technical insight into user behavior, conversion, and retention.
- Help establish and grow a data-first culture throughout the organization.
- Manage, mentor, and develop a small team of Data Engineers/Analysts.
To best perform in this job, you will demonstrate:
- Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical teams.
- Familiarity with APIs, event tracking systems, and customer data platforms.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills; comfortable working cross-functionally in a fast-paced, high-growth company.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or similar roles, preferably in a subscription or digital media environment.
- Expert in building modern data stacks with tools like dbt, Fivetran, BigQuery.
- Strong SQL and Python skills; able to own production-grade pipelines end-to-end.
- Experience with Looker and a deep understanding of conversion funnels.
Salary, Perks & Benefits:
- The salary range for this role is $220,000 – $230,000, but the final offer amount is dependent on incumbent’s relevant experience, skill-level, and location
